Rachel Carson

Lady Ecologist

Born in 1907, Rachel Carson becamepassionate about nature in early childhood. She lived on a farm and wrote stories about animals and the ocean. She published her first book at the age of just 11!

She studied Biology and did a Masters in Zoology. She was unable to do a doctorate for economic reasons and started working as a teacher and for the Fish and Wildlife Administration as a writer of popular science texts.

When Rachel moved to countryside in Maryland, she realized that DDT, an insecticide used to treat crops, was destroying the wildlife. Deeply concerned, she wrote her most famous book, “Silent Spring”. As a result, she was accused of being a Communist!

We can say that Rachel Carson is a pioneer of the environmentalist movement. It is important to think about the consequences of environmental deterioration on human health.
