“Women are not on the way; they are already there”.

Margarita Salas used these words to describe the reality of laboratories and research spaces worldwide. Even now, women are still lacking or even missing in science, and often their absence is felt most in studies and professions related to science, engineering and technology sectors, such as digital technology. Indeed, these are the sectors that will be related to the majority of future jobs.

Amongst Women in Science is a science culture project undertaken by the Fundación Séneca-Agencia de Ciencia y Tecnología, the science and technology agency of the region of Murcia. This work aims to increase visibility of the role and participation of women in science by showcasing the strength of these female role models as a means to inspire a greater number of young women to develop their talent in the laboratories of universities, research centres and private companies.

For this reason, Amongst Women in Science contributes in its own way to showcase the life and activity of prestigious women scientists around the world. These women are currently leading important areas of biology, medicine, chemistry, mathematics, physics, economics, education, psychology, or engineering. Within these disciplines their contributions have been, and indeed are, essential for the advancement of knowledge and for the transformation of our societies. Amongst these scientists we find Spanish scientists on the front lines of research on the replication genetic matter, Down syndrome, the fight against cancer, smart biomaterials, or researchers responsible for developing the world's first bionic exoskeletons which are able to change the lives of thousands of children suffering from spinal muscular atrophy.

Putting the spotlight on these women who work in science and sharing their contributions to the great advances and discoveries that are building a better future, we hope more young people will develop their vocation along this path. Thus, the younger generation will be able to choose studies and professions related to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) freely, without external factors, and social, educational or cultural stereotypes conditioning their choice. This is also essential if these fields and professions are to represent the whole of our society, and to benefit from the talent brought with the incorporation and the full and equal participation of women in research and science.

Amongst Women in Science is also a project true to the ethos held by Fundación Séneca since its creation, on promoting the dialogue between science and art, encouraging expressions of curiosity, imagination and creativity and providing a source of profound change. Katarzyna Rogowicz, the artist who has taken up the challenge of portraying each scientist and interpreting certain elements of their work, has succeeded to draw a universe of boundless discoveries for each female scientist with "limitless boundaries".
