The aesthetic experience of photographic images and the role of perception in interpreting, appreciating and evaluating photographs

The goal of my research project is to develop an account of the aesthetic experience of photographic images in terms of working out a conceptual framework for the processes of interpreting, appreciating and evaluating photographs. This aim is to be achieved by developing a comprehensive account of photographic relevance that explains how we consider properties and expressive means of photographs to be the subject of interpretation, appreciation and evaluation in the specific contexts of their production and use. To this end photographic aesthetic and non-aesthetic values need to be clearly distinguished and described.

The developed theoretical framework will also enable the resulting account to provide practical guidelines for writing photography criticism, and for evaluating competing interpretations and appraisals of the same photographic works.

Account of Aesthetic Experience

The account of the aesthetic experience of photographic images is developed in the context of investigating the role of perception in interpreting, appreciating and evaluating photographs. On the one hand, the aesthetic value of photographic images might be considered primarily or even exclusively conceptual, regarding perceptual properties of little or no aesthetic importance. Conceptual or conceptually oriented photographic practices are often supported by (a more or less explicit and elaborate version of) this view.

On the other hand, one might also consider the perceptual properties of photographic images highly relevant or even central or decisive to their aesthetic value. Traditional fine art photographers usually accepted (a more or less explicit and elaborate version) of this view. This account defends and supports the latter position.

Personal Interest and Practical Components

Besides my philosophical interest I am also an active fine art photographer and curator. The theoretical investigations will be accompanied by practical, case study components, applying the findings of the project in my photographic and curatorial works.

Incorporation into Current Research Project

This research will be incorporated into the current (2016-2009) research project ("Aesthetic experience of the arts and the complexity of perception") lead by the host research group leader, Professor Francisca de Asís Pérez Carreño at the Department of Philosophy, University of Murcia.

Participation in Academic Life and Activities

At the University of Murcia I will actively participate in the academic life and activities of my host group. I would give regular internal talks and seminars to members of the group, and I would also be very happy to organize a reading group in the area of my research project. My initial research results have already been communicated at prestigious conferences in the field, and in Murcia I intend to work on the international peer-reviewed journal paper versions of these conference papers.

Collaborative Projects and Expected Outcomes

On the basis of the current schedule of my project I anticipate that I will complete at least two journal papers during my stay in Murcia (naturally acknowledging the support received from this grant). I expect to be able to send the papers to well-established journals in the field. Furthermore, as a director of a contemporary photography gallery in Budapest I also expect to develop collaborative projects in curating and photography while staying in Murcia; I may curate exhibitions in Murcia and/or I may bring the photographic work of local artists to show in my gallery in Budapest.
